Description

Join SEGS for a trip to Alum Bluff, Florida’s largest natural exposure, on the Apalachicola River just a short ride from the Bristol boat ramp. Alum Bluff is the tallest natural exposure in Florida with approximately 125 feet of fossiliferous limestone, sand, silt and clay observable during low water stages of the Apalachicola River. The strata exposed contain some of the most diverse and well-preserved fossil molluscan faunas in the world. As such, the site is the focus of many scientific publications. SEGS guidebook #51 contains more information on the stratigraphy and invertebrate fauna at Alum Bluff.

Itinerary:

  1. We will meet Friday evening at 7 pm (Nov. 6th) at the Florida Geological Survey, 3000 Commonwealth Blvd., Tallahassee, Florida 32399. There will be pizza and drinks provided along with a presentation by SEGS officers. A short tour of the FGS museum will also be provided to attendees.
  2. Lodging will not be provided by SEGS but is available at one of the many hotels in Tallahassee. (The boat ramp is approximately one hour from Tallahassee).
  3. We will plan to meet at the boat ramp in Bristol Saturday November 7th at 9 am EST.
  4. Alum Bluff is a 20 minute boat ride up river from the ramp. Personal flotation devices must be worn while underway. We will review basic safety before departure.
  5. Attendees will need to provide their own meals and snacks for the day. SEGS will have a cooler with cold drinks.
  6. We will plan to return to the ramp by 4 pm to allow for travel.
