Our second trip of 2019 is to the sand pits on the Lake Wakes Ridge courtesy of long-time SEGS member Marc Hurst and colleagues at C.C. Calhoun, Inc. This is an opportunity to learn about Plio-Pleistocene Cypresshead Formation sands and do some fulgurite hunting, as previously enjoyed and documented in our 2011, 2017, and 2018 Newsletters, website photo gallery, and SEGS Guidebooks #50 and #70.
Saturday, March 23
We’ll meet on March 23 at 9:30 AM, at the entrance of C.C. Calhoun, Inc.’s Pit No. 7, located at 3000 Bannon Island Rd, Haines City, FL 33844. After an hour or two, we might move to another nearby pit to continue collecting until lunch, at which point participants should arrange lunch on their own. There are many restaurants in nearby Haines City.
Age and Safety Restrictions
Children welcome with completed waiver and accompanying adult. Safety glasses (sunglasses), shirts, and closed-toe shoes are required. Drinks, sunscreen, and insect repellent recommended. SEGS will supply bottled water, but we suggest bringing plentiful fluids.
